W.J. HOPKINSON
(1887-1970)
William John Hopkinson was born in London England.
W.J. Hopkinson studied under Walter White in
London but was mainly self-taught. English artist
W.J Hopkinson chose to live in Canada (Newmarket,
Ontario) in 1912. He traveled and painted in
Massachusetts and the Algoma and Haliburton
area of Ontario, and also visited British Columbia,
where this superbly executed lakescape is done.
He taught at the St. Croix School of Art, New
Brunswick, and in Ontario. He exhibited with
the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1945,
and held a solo exhibition at the North York
Public Library in 1966.His works are registered
in the National Gallery of Ottawa. One of his
works was chosen as a centennial project (Aurora,
Ontario).
He is recognized as an important Canadian artist
by the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario). His works
are classified in the prestigious E.P. Taylor
research library and archives. His works are
considered Canadian Heritage Art. The dark brooding
landscapes immediately recognizable by the viewer,
his trademark style. W.J Hopkinson was a precursor
to the Group of Seven. His artworks struck a
cord with the Canadian art collector and remain
heirlooms of the Canadian landscape art. His
works are in major collections throughout Ontario
